South Korea: Seoul – Jongmyo Shrine
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Jongmyo Shrine is one of the most important religious sites in Korea. Built in the 14th century, it’s dedicated to the spirits of Korean royalty, specifically built for the memorial services for deceased kings and queens. It is the oldest Confucian shrine that still practices rituals and ceremonies as they were originally established in the 14th century. The shrine is somewhat obscured by renovation, but there are extensive park grounds around with beautiful scenery, as well as many other religious buildings to explore. It gets quite crowded as the shrine holds huge religious significance for Koreans.
