Armenia: Dashtadem Fortress

A stunning ancient fortress with the background of beautiful Mount Ararat – Dashtadem Fortress! The origins of Dashdadem Fortress date back to the 7th century, with significant additions and renovations occurring in the 12th century. It served as a strategic defensive stronghold during medieval times and was an important part of the region’s fortification system of the Georgian kingdom. The fortress features massive stone walls, fortified towers, and battlements designed to withstand sieges and attacks. The use of red basalt stone gives the fortress an imposing appearance. At the heart of the fortress is a central keep, which was the last line of defense. This keep is surrounded by thick walls and includes living quarters and storage facilities, reflecting the fortress’s role as a military and residential complex.The fortress is situated on a hilltop, offering a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, and most important – a stunning view of Mount Ararat (which is actually in Turkey).
