Mauritania: Mhaireth Oasis
Exploring central Mauritania is awesome – the Adrar plateau has hidden oases that are simply out of fairy tales – lost in sands and stony ravines, filled with date palms, and traditional round houses called tikkits that look half-futuristic and half-ancient. It’s really like a scene from the movie Dune! One of such oases is Mhaireth. This one is the largest oasis in the Adrar region, situated along a river bed. The east side offers the most panoramic views down into the oasis from the escarpment of the plateau, hundreds of feet high.
