Australia: Kakadu NP – Field Lilies

After the rains, the savanna habitat in the Kakadu National Park explodes with wildflowers. We came across a large patch of the rocky grounds just covered with white lilies, the kind that are sold as decorative plants in the US and Europe. Here, they are endemic and native, known as Field Lily or Swamp Lily aka Crinum angustifolium. The bulbs lie dormant for most of the year and then explode with green shoot after the first rains and huge white flowers shortly thereafter.
