USA/AZ: Petrified Forest National Park
Petrified Forest National Park contains the world’s largest and most colorful collection of fossilized wood and plants. Giant logs from trees that grew over 225 million years in Late Triassic period can be found all over the park in abundance. The fallen trees accumulated in low lying area and were later covered with volcanic ash, later on ground water dissolved the silica in the ash, and the resulting quartz crystals replaced organic matter, turning the wood into stone.
