Bahamas/Abacos: Green Turtle Cay – Loyalist Memorial in New Plymouth

The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden, located in New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay, commemorates the arrival of the loyalist settlers who sought refuge in the Bahamas during the American Revolution. The memorial, opened in 1985, features 24 busts of Bahamians (representing different Bahamian islands), surrounding the lifesize bronze figures of two girls, one black, and one white. One child holds a conch shell, an important Bahamian symbol, while the other holds the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain. Artist James Mastin sculptured the busts and the figures. The latter represent a new beginning in Bahamas for the thousands of Loyalists of the American Revolution in 1783. And when seen from the air – the entire memorial is arranged around the Union Jack.
