Germany: Kronach & Festung Rosenberg
Kronach is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture in the old town and a stunning hilltop fortress. Standing above the old town is then massive and imposing Rosenberg Fortress aka Festung Rosenberg. The fortress dates back to at least the 13th century, though it was significantly expanded and modified over the centuries. It is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Germany, offering spectacular panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside. The fortress is known for its extensive fortifications, including multiple layers of walls, bastions, and ditches designed to withstand sieges. Below the fortress is beautiful Altstadt aka old town with an ornate renaissance Town Hall (Rathaus), gothic St. John’s Church (Stadtkirche St. Johannes, and several streets of well-preserved medieval old buildings and half-timbered houses. Also between the fortress and the old town is the Lukas-Cranach-Tower, named after the famous Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, who was born in Kronach, the tower offers great views over the town as well.
