Haiti: Port-au-Prince – Mountain-side Housing

Many areas of Port-au-Prince are characterized by dense housing projects clinging to very steep mountains sides and hills. The district of Jalousie, Carrefour-Feuilles, and south of Pétion-Ville have some of the most impressive areas. These look quite similar to favelas in Rio in Brazil. All these neighborhoods are at high risk for earthquakes, landslides, and flooding due to their location on steep hillsides and their overbuilt conditions. homes clinging to the hillside, built from makeshift materials without proper planning or construction standards. Many of these homes were rebuilt quickly after the earthquake, often without adhering to building codes, leaving them vulnerable to future quakes or landslides. All of them suffer from inadequate infrastructure, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water.
