Morocco: Agadir – Souk el Had

Agadir Souk aka Souk el Has is also known as Souk El Had, is one of the largest and most vibrant markets in Morocco and the entire Africa. It covers more than 13 hectares and contains over 3,000 shops. It appears to be a fortress from afar, with its 6m high wall punctured by 13 big doorways. Located in the heart of Agadir, this marketplace is bustling with sellers and buyers and all sort of stuff for sale. The covered souk is divided into several sections, each dedicated to different types of goods – fresh produce, spices, textiles, clothing, leather goods, ceramics, jewelry, handmade crafts, and so on. The amount and variety of olive and picked stuff was just astounding. While the souk looks like an old fortress, it was established in the Amsernat area, near the industrial zone, after the 1960 earthquake. Souk El Had means Sunday Market, in commemoration of the weekly market hosted in Agadir’s old Talborjt.
