Solomon Islands: Kolombangara – Exploring Kolomongara Shores
Kolombangara offered awesome opportunities to explore in zodiac along its shoreline and also up the several rivers. Kolombangara means “God of Warer” on the local langurs, perhaps for over 80 rivers descending from the volcanic peak in the middle. Untouched jungle, plenty of birdlife (a lot of rare endemic species), remote villages with few inhabitants, bizarre trees – it’s all here! And the towering peak of the volcano clad in clouds towering beyond the shore. The volcano, Mt Veve, is 1,770 m (5,807 ft) high, a perfectly shaped conical stratovolcano. The waters around Kolombangara Island are also protected as a marine reserve.
