Papua New Guinea: Rabaul Volcano & Hot Springs

The town of Rabaul was the provincial capital until the volcanic eruption of the Rabaul Volcano in 1994, burying the town completely under ash and pyroclastic flows. The volcano is actually a large caldera with four peaks – Tavunur (the one that erupted in 1994)), twin cones of Vulkan, and Rabalanakaia. The volcanoes have been continually active, smoke rising from vents, and many hot springs and fumarole fields. The town of Rabaul has been somewhat restored but the provincial capital was moved south to Kokopo, which is now a major town.
