Papua New Guinea: Rabaul Volcano Observatory
People of Rabaul lived in a constant fear of one of their four volcanic peaks blowing up since 1983 when the volcanoes became active. It took another 10 years before the volcano blew up and buried the town under tons of ash, but luckily most resident got evacuated and there were only 5 casualties (but almost all housing completely collapsed under the accumulated ash). Since then, the Rabaul Volcano Observatory has been created on a high ridge above the caldera that monitors the activity. The panorama opening from the observatory ground is truly stunning – you cave a perfect crescent of the bay with towering and steaming stratovolcanoes around it.
