Algeria: Algiers – Exploring the Casbah

A UNESCO World Heritage, the Casbah of Algiers is an ancient city and fortress that has been inhabited since the 6th century. Everything here feels like you are back in the ancient times – old crumbling buildings, simple old mosques, and a complete maze of streets – all on a very steep hill going down to the Mediterranean sea. The living quarters of every house are maximized by building over the passageway below and then building on top – its almost incredible how all this jigsaw puzzle of construction is not collapsing. Today, the residents are mostly squatters, and the government seems little concerned about restoration or preservation, but it feels very authentic, real, and amazing, including the bustling markets and crowded shops.
