Philippines/Cebu: Cebu – Magellan’s Cross Pavilion
Next to the Basilica del Santo Niño, in the heart of Plaza Sugbo in a Cebu City stands a pavilion housing the Magellan’s Cross. It is a large wooden cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 during the first global circumnavigation. It is encased in another wooden cross to protect it from relic-seeking pilgrims. This iconic cross marks the spot where Magellan and his Spanish expedition members first planted the Christian cross on Cebu soil.
