Japan/Honshu: Nara – Todai-ji Temple
Another famous temple in Nara is the Todai-ji Temple. It is renowned for housing a giant Buddha statue, Daibutsu. This statue is one of the largest bronze statues of Buddha in the world. It stands at approximately 15 m (49 feet) tall. The Daibutsuden, or Hall of the Great Buddha, is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Todai-ji was originally constructed in 752 AD as the headquarters of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
