Japan/Kyushu: Beppu – Oniishi Bozu Jigoku Mud Pools

Next to the Jigoku Meguri Geothermal Area (previous post) there is a smaller one – Oniishi Bozu Jigoku aka Mud Pools. Oniishi Bozu Jigoku literally means “Shaven Monk’s Head Hell,” and there are about a dozen or two of bubbling grey mud volcanic pools that do resemble a shaved head. The mud pools in Oniishibozu Jigoku are characterized by their grayish-brown hue, and the constant activity within them calls for meditation while watching the earth core bubble out here. Surprisingly, there is no sulfur smell.
