Japan/Kyushu: Beppu – Exploring the Town

Beppu is unique in itself as the hot steam is present almost everywhere – the streets and house are steaming, food is cooked using volcanic steam, and almost every hotel and even private houses have onsen saunas. The steam looks particularly impressive at night when the air is colder. We stayed in a traditional Japanese ryokan inn (sleeping on hard floor), but it had an onsen on site which we had all to ourselves. Beppu is perhaps the most famous in Japan for its onsens, a national tradition.
