Japan/Kyushu: Beppu – Jigoku Mushi Hell-Steaming

In the heart of the volcanic onsen town of Beppu there is an iconic restaurant known for its “hell-steaming”, named Jigoku Mushi. The abundance of volcanic steam and heat in Beppu led to the development of this unique cooking technique as far back as early 17th century. The way it works here – you pick as many various dishes from extensive menus – vegetables, shellfish, meat, fish, eggs, and endless combinations thereof – and then you yourself get to load it into traditional wooden steam chimneys, where the steam comes straight from the volcanic depth underneath the town. Once cooked, you are instructed to take it out yourself and enjoy you “hell-steamed” meal. An absolutely awesomely amazing experience! And healthy too.
