Cuba: Guantanamo

While for most Guantanamo is associate with the US Base, the city itself is quite far from the base and it’s a beautiful and friendly town full of colonial architecture, vibrant musical and arts traditions, and a rich Afro-Cuban heritage. It was founded in 1797 and played a strategic role in Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain. You can just roam the streets, grab a good cafe Cubano, and people-watch. Notable landmarks include the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption and the Plaza de la Revolución. The city is also known for its vibrant music scene, with genres like son cubano and Afro-Cuban rhythms contributing to its cultural richness, and the locals would swear their music is the real Cuban music and way better then the stuff in the far away Havana. By the way, the song “Guantanamera” about a Cuban girl comes from here!
