Central African Republic: Bangui – Obangui River

Bangui is situated on the banks of the Ubangi River, which forms the country’s southern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Obangui River is one of the major rivers in Central Africa and a key tributary of the Congo River, the second-largest river in the world by discharge. Opposite of Bangui, the river is wide and camp and you can hire a small porphyry to cruise around (as most tourists do and you don’t see much). Alternatively you can get a full large motorboat and really go explore downstream and upstream. The city’s name derives from the Bobangi word “Bangî”, meaning “rapids,” referring to the fast-moving water upstream.
