Ibiza: Cathedral of Ibiza in Eivissa
Catedral de la Verge de les Neus (Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows) aka Cathedral of Ibiza is the main religious structure on the party island. Ibiza was part of the Muslim empire until 1235 when King James I of Aragon conquered Ibiza and the neighboring Mallorca, deporting almost the entire Muslim population and bringing in new settlers from Girona. As the first act of conquerors, it was agreed to construct a cathedral at the highest point and dedicate to Saint Mary. The structure was rebuilt and enhanced multiple times throughout the centuries. It’s quite spectacular (and cool on a hot day) inside with a lot of religious treasures and priceless works of art (some halls are off limits for photography). The plaza next to the cathedral offers spectacular panoramas of the city and harbor below.
