France: Arles
Another city with Roman artifacts and structures, Arles boasts many sites that are unique in the world – a Gallo-Roman theater and a massive Roman arena. For a period of time, Arles actually was the capital of the vast Roman empire and it was a major seaport (the coast has retreated since). Both the arena and the theater are still used as such, and once can explore every book and cranny of them. On top of all this, there are several important monuments from the Middle Ages as well.
