St Pierre & Miquelon: Exploring St Pierre town
A one hour rough seas ferry ride takes you from moose-shooting and baby seal-clubbing Newfoundland to the French St Pierre with French flags, brasseries, good espresso and croissants. Misty and foggy, the town is just a couple cobblestone streets by the harbor, but is distinctly different culturally and visually from Canada. Interestingly, St Pierre played a massive role during the prohibition in USA, acting as the transit center for millions of barrels of whiskey. St Pierre was covered by borderline impenetrable fog, and after reading about it – turns out this is a nearly constant thing for June-August as they warm waters of Gulfstream clash with the cold currency of the Newfoundland stream creating the fogginess.
