Kiribati: Exploring North Tarawa on foot
Exploring North Tarawa is a totally different experience – no roads and no bridge. You time it right and cross the channel separating North and South Tarawas on foot at low tide wading knee deep in the lagoon water. After that you can hike through three islands – Abatao, Tabiteuea, and Tabuki – crossing the shallow lagoons in between. You walk through villages that are as primitive as they get – no electricity or phone, small earth huts covered with palm leaves, and people surviving on fishing and coconuts/pandanus palms (nothing else grows in the sand of Kiribati). People either walk or ride bicycles, and everybody seems happy and friendly, despite lack of wifi. At the end of last island to get to a broken bridge leading to the next island – truly end of the road.
