Djibouti: Lake Abbe – Limestone Chimneys
Lake Abbé lies at the point where three tectonic plates are pulling apart creating a Rift Valley. The lake’s eastern shores on the Djibouti side are famous for peculiar and bizarre limestone chimneys – massive 50m/150ft towers of limestone formed by continuously fuming and erupting hot springs. The dry landscape is interspersed with hot springs and surrounding wet bog that host wildlife and some domestic donkeys enjoying the mud. The chimneys are spectacular and climbable! The landscape is absolutely otherworldly with another Martian-like experience!
