Eritrea: Tank Cemetery
Eritrea fought a long 30+ year war against Ethiopia for independence, with the heaviest hostilities between 1988-90, ultimately resulting in the Ethiopian defeat and Eritrea becoming the newest independent country in the world at the time. The relationship between the countries is still strained and the border is closed and disputed. On the outskirts of Asmara there is a massive junkyard of the Ethiopian military equipment seized and destroyed in the war – tanks, armored vehicles, equipment carriers, trucks, and jeeps (all made in the USSR). It’s a giant open air museum of the country’s history.
