Myanmar: Bagan – Air Ballooning over Bagan
The absolute must-do thing in Bagan is taking a hot air balloon ride over the Bagan Plain of 10,000 temples and pagodas at sunrise. The balloons rise just as the sun comes up in the east and then gently float quite low over the temples. The views of the same temples that you explore from the ground by day give quite a different perspective from the air as you see their shapes and structures. In the morning, mist covers the ground and some Bagan temples seem suspended in mid-air. The balloons cross above the entire Bagan plain (if the winds cooperate, the day before my flight everything got blown in opposite direction and nobody saw any temples) and land on a sand bar in the middle of Ayeyrwaddy River. A definite bucket list adventure!
