Mexico/Yucatan: Hochob Ruins

Hochob is another Mayan site in central Campeche state and this one has very elaborately carved ruins all centers around a single plaza, that itself sits on a hilltop. Hochob literally means “the place of the corn cobs”, the site dates to 100AD and saw continuous habitation until around 1100AD, it was more of a ceremonial center than a city. Hochob was only excavated recently, starting in 1980, with four temples and palaces being uncovered so far. All have almost perfectly preserved geometric design carvings and sculptures of heads of gods with bulging eyes and fangs. In fact, one of the main doorways is actually meant to be a mouth.
