Afghanistan: Mausoleum of Nadir Shah
Mausoleum to the King Nadir Shah who was assassinated in 1933 stands on Teppe Maranjan, a mound in the middle of Kabul (interestingly this mound is the oldest continually inhabited part of Kabul, dating back to the 4th century). The mausoleum is closed to public (but once again was miraculously opened for a rare tourist like me). The austere yet grand white marble building stands on the highest point overlooking the sprawling city below. The black tomb inside is symbolic, the real tombs for the king and his family are in the basement (which I visited too). Civil wars have damaged the mausoleum, but it’s still revered by all Afghani who quite openly miss the shah days and the former Afghan glory. Just below this mausoleum is a smaller and much older mausoleum.
