Afghanistan: Road from Kabul to Bamyan

The road from Kabul to Bamyan is roughly 200km and goes through multiple valleys and two high mountain passes – Unai Pass and Hajigak Pass. The former is 3,000 m / 9,843 ft, while the latter is even higher at 3,700 m / 12,100 ft. For a long time this was considered to the “road of death” as it was almost impossible to go safely from Kabul to Bamyan without being attacked, kidnapped, killed, or just blown to pieces by iED. The only connection was by plane and the road still has signs of explosions. But now it’s pretty safe, with just a few Taliban checkpoints and actually rather good asphalt. Plenty of fantastic desolate landscapes, twisting road switchbacks, and lonely Russian-made KAMAZ trucks.
