Aldabra: Aldabra Atoll – Cruising the Channels
Aldabra Atoll is characterized by its unique and complex network of channels that flow between the four main islands—Picard, Polymnie, Malabar, and Grande Terre. These channels are essential for the atoll’s ecosystem, allowing the flow of seawater in and out of the lagoon with tidal changes, which supports a wide range of marine life. These channels experience strong tidal currents that sculpt the surrounding coral structures and provide pathways for species such as sharks, rays, and turtles. The little islets provide perfect breeding grounds for several species of seabirds, especially large colonies of brown noddies. We cruised the island by zodiac, with birds at hand’s reach and turtles swimming all around!
