Aleutian Islands: Orcas Along Alaska Marine Highway
And on the very last evening of the journey along the Aleutian Islands in the way to Kodiak Islands orcas (aka killer whales) came out in several large groups. First we spotted their distinctive fins far away and as the boat approached, you could see them hop like dolphins quite close on both sides of the ship, probably 2-3 dozen of them! I have see orca before, but a single individuals, not in thee numbers. Baby orcas swam close to their mothers. Resembling dolphins in many way, orcas are apex and ferocious predators and have been known to attack anything from fish to seals to even massive baleen whales.
