Aleutian Islands: Unalaska – Salmonberry
There are endless amounts of salmonberries in Unalaska – everywhere you look. This distant relative of raspberry has berries that are much bigger and juicier, less sweet, and way more abundant. The salmonberry bushes cover pretty much everything here – roadsides, hillsides, meadows, etc. I ate pounds and pounds of them to the point of not being able to walk anymore – so delicious! In Latin it’s known as Rubus Mirabilis and is endemic and widespread in Alaska and Pacific Northwest. It’s worth flying all the way here just to eat this! The salmonberry name actually comes from the fact that Aleutians and other aboriginal cultures used to eat the salmonberries crushed together with salmon caviar (and this sounds pretty awful).
