Algeria: Algiers – Martyrs’ Memorial
Maqam Echahid (or Martyrs’ Memorial) is massive iconic monument celebrating the Algerian fight for independence. What are supposed to be three palm leaves combine to shelter an eternal flame beneath. It was built in 1982 and is visible from pretty much any part of Algiers. At the corners of the leaves stand three soldiers (again Kalashnikov machine gun is immortalized).
