Algeria: Beni Hammad Fort

Fort Beni Hammad Fort is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Algeria. The fort was built in the early 11th century (1007–1008) by Hammad ibn Buluggin, the founder of the Hammadid dynasty. It served as the first capital of the Hammadid Empire until 1090, when the capital was moved to Bejaja. The site is a prime example of Islamic military architecture from the medieval period. It includes the remains of a palace, a mosque, and various other buildings, offering insights into the urban planning and architectural style of the time. By far the main sight is the stunning minaret – of the largest in Algeria – featuring a 20m-high square tower.
