Algeria: Constantine

he city of Constantine is absolutely a jewel of Algeria! Often referred to as the “City of Bridges,” due to its numerous impressive bridges spanning the deep gorges of the Rhumel River, the city looks like something from the Lord of Rings world – deep gorge, multiple bridges, building holding on to the cliffs. Known as “Cirta” in ancient times, Constantine has a rich history that dates back to the Phoenician and Roman eras and was named after Emperor Constantine the Great in 313 AD. Already from stunning vistas and bridge that are simply surreal, Constantine has an authentic old town aka casbah with a mix of old French architecture and Ottoman palaces and mosques, like the Ahmed Bey Palace. Constantine’s blend of ancient history and modern development, along with its dramatic landscape, makes it a an absolutely surreal and a must-see destination.
