Algeria: Djemila Roman Ruins

Djemila is an ancient Roman city. a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating glimpse into Roman urban planning and architecture. Djemila was founded in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Nerva as a Roman colony. The city flourished as a center of trade and culture until the decline of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. The city sprawls over hills with panoramic views and it’s layout follows the typical Roman grid pattern, with a forum, basilicas, temples, and residential areas. You can roam around the ruins for hours, the most notable ones are – the Forum, Arch of Caracalla (a triumphal arch erected in 216 AD), the Theatre (a well-preserved Roman theatre that could accommodate around 3,000 spectators), the Christian Basilica, and lavish private residence with bathhouses and mosaics. One of the most massive Roman ruin sites in Africa and overall!
