Algeria: Oran – Fort de Santa Cruz
The main attraction in Oran is the spectacular Fort de Santa Cruz, perched on Mount Murdjadjo at an elevation of about 500m, offering stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The fort was built by the Spanish in 1577 and played a significant role in the defense of Oran. It was later enhanced by the French during their colonial period. The architecture of the fort reflects the military design of its time, featuring thick walls, bastions, and watchtowers. The fort is also famous for the Chapel of Santa Cruz, a small chapel that houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, overlooking the city below it. This chapel was built in gratitude after a cholera epidemic in the 19th century, which locals believe ended due to divine intervention. You can get to the top of the fort for the most surreal views, and also see the Chapel from the ledge above the town.
