Algeria: Tassili n’Ajjer NP – Into the Heart of the Sahara Desert

The oasis town of Djanet in southern Algeria is the gateway to the heart of the Sahara – this is almost a dead in the center of the vast Saharan desert. Looking on the map – you are closer here to the nomansland of the Algeria and Niger borders then to Algiers. Just north of Djanet lies the spectacular Tassili n’Ajjer – a vast plateau in the southeastern part of Algeria that is a UNESCO World Heritage site with stunning landscapes and archeology. The landscape of Tassili n’Ajjer is characterized by dramatic sandstone formations, including natural arches, pillars, deep gorges, and lots and lots of sand. This is Sahara at its primal!
