Algeria: Tiemcen – Exploring the City
Tiemcen is a large town in the far northwestern corner of Algeria, dating back to Roman times and 2nd century CE. The city thrived during the early Islamic period and really reached its apogee during the Zayyanid dynasty in 13-16th century when it became the capital of the Western Maghreb. The centerpiece of the city is the Great Mosque of Tiemcen, built in 1083 and a masterpiece of the Almoravid architecture with an ornate prayer hall, and a distinctive square minaret (you are allowed to walk inside). Another Historic place just a couple blocks from the mosque is the Mechouar Palace – a real fortress in the heart of the city, built in early 14th century. Add to this a grid of old French architecture old town – and this place should be a UNESCO World Heritage candidate.
