Andorra: Santuari vell del Meritxell
Santuari vell del Meritxell aka Sanctuary of Meritxell is the most important religious site in Andorra, despite being very new – it houses the image of Our Lady of Meritxell, the country’s patron saint, a rework of the original statue which was destroyed in a fire in 1972. The futuristic modern church also house other relics as well as replicas of all the historic churches from all over Andorra (in this case “all over” means a radius of a couple dozen kilometers). Frankly, the architecture looked a bit kitschy, and the furniture and decor inside looked like it belonged in an IKEA catalogue.
