Angola: Farol do Piambo Lighthouse
Right next to the Praia Pedras Negras beach is the Farol do Piambo lighthouse. This entire area and the nearby beaches are distinguished by its unique basaltic rock formations, a result of ancient volcanic activity. There are also several sea-stacks just offshore and a lot of underwater rocks – hence the need for the lighthouse so as not as any more skeletons to the Skeleton Coast (named so for numerous shipwrecks). The lighthouse was built in 1968 and originally flashed every 10 seconds from its tower at 54m above the sea level. But as a lot of things in Angola, it’s been conducting for years.
