Angola: Iona NP – Colinas Canyon
The sandstone cliffs of the spectacular Colinas Canyon on the Iona NP in the heart of Namib Desert make you feel like you are in the American Southwest – Utah or Arizona – it’s so similar! This red sandstone canyon has been sculpted over centuries by wind and water erosion, resulting in dramatic cliffs, ravines, and rock formations. The landscape’s hues range from pale yellow to deep dark red and are especially colorful during sunrise. The canyon’s full name is Colinas do Curoca. And what could be more incredible then camping in the wilderness of the vast Namib Desert in Angola under the sandstone cliffs of the Colinas Canyon. Chicken, pork and thick bacon grilled over fire, good Angolan wine (surprisingly good), and sleeping in a tent under the absolutely stunning starry sky, miles from any light pollution!
