Angola: Lubango – Miradouro do Cristo-Rei
One of the most spectacular sights in southern Angola is the stunning mountaintop viewpoint of the Miradouro do Cristo-Rei aka Christ the King Viewpoint. Perched at 2,100m atop the Serra da Chela, it features a 14m white marble statue of Christ with arms outstretched, overlooking the city and its valley. Built in 1957, it’s a nod to its brethren in other Portuguese-speaking countries —Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Cristo Rei in Lisbon in Portugal. The site offers a 360-degree panorama that stretches for dozens of miles and on a clear day, the city sprawls below, framed by rugged cliffs. And there are some rare endemic birds to be seen here as well!
