Angola: Lubango – Se Catedral de Sao Jose & City Center
The Se Catedral de Sao Jose is a the most landmark in the southern city of Lubango. Constructed in 1939, this cathedral serves as the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lubango. Its a striking modern Gothic architectural style with by two towers with pyramidal roofs and distinct elements of art deco (after traveling so much, you finally start to see a difference between art deco and art nouveau and so on, lol). Next to the cathedral is Lubango’s central square, known for its vibrant atmosphere and serves as a hub for various activities (government controlled of course). Another interesting place in the heart of Lubango is the small Huila Regional Museum – a collection of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to the customs, beliefs, and traditions of the southern provinces of Angola: Huila, Namibe, Cunene, and Cuando Cubango. Photography not allowed inside. On the outside there are several historical statue and busts, mostly dedicated to Portuguese military officers, explorers, governors connected to southern Angola’s history. The museum is right in the heart of the city, surrounded by several colorful colonial buildings.
