Angola: Massive Baobabs on the Road to Lubango
Baobabs (Adansonia digitata) are a striking feature in southern Angola, particularly along the road leading to Lubango from Namibia. Some of these trees are over 1000 years old. Baobabs (Adansonia digitata) thrive here in semi-arid environments and are common and revered by locals tribes. Locals use their fruits, leaves, and bark for food, medicine, and shelter. Some baobabs in Southern Angola have hollow trunks, which in the past were used as prisons. Large baobabs serve sometimes as meeting places or landmarks in rural communities.
