Argentina: Mendoza
Mendoza is the capital of the famous wine-growing region and a pleasant city to explore in the historic center. Just like many Spanish colonial cities, Mendoza is laid out as a perfect grid with the central square – Plaza Independencia – in the heart of the city. Further out, four smaller plazas. San Martín, Chile, Italia, and Espana – are located equidistant from the main plaza, two blocks away. The are between all the plazas is very green and many streets are purely pedestrian, with cafes and shops. Many ornate buildings line up the streets and the walkways have mosaics and mosaic laden state, reminiscent of Barcelona. The main square also boasts great fountain. The city is definitely worth a stop, but if it the wineries you are after – move on further south.
