Argentina: Peninsula Valdes – Terrestrial Fauna
The entire Peninsula Valdes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique fauna. Besides the marine mammals and birds like whales, penguins, orcas, and sea lions – there are many unique terrestrial animals that you can observe. Pichi or dwarf armadillo lives only here and is the only armadillo that hibernates. Guanacos are wild camelid roaming the central part of the peninsula. There are also rheas – distant relatives of ostriches, and maras – incredible animals that look like rabbits but are actually rodents related to guinea pigs (they are the forth largest rodent in the world).
