Armenia: Mount Ararat Views
Mount Ararat actually lies in Turkey, some 40km from the Armenian border. The near perfect conical stratovolcano has double peaks – Ararat at 5,137 m (16,854 ft) and Little Ararat at 3,896 m (12,782 ft). Beautiful and snow-capped, the mountain can be seen from many vantage points, roads and the Armenian capital on a clear day. For Armenians, it’s a sacred mountain and the symbol of the nation (Armenians are often called “people of Ararat”). Ararat has been depicted on all Armenian coats of arms, many flags and coins throughout the ages and in the medieval times it was part of Great Armenia. As we drove through eastern Armenia – the mountain stood magically at every high point and we couldn’t help but keep stopping for photos.
