Ascension: Around the Island
Ascension island is rather small has an area of approximately 88 sq km (34 sq mi), easy to drive all around in just a few hours. Most of the island is the desolate landscape of lava flows and cinder cones – the island is a peak on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and there are over 40 dormant cones identifies on Ascension. Beyond the capital of Georgetown (coming in a separate post), there is only a small settlement of Two Boats in the middle of the island. More noteworthy, Ascension is home to both American and British military bases that are of worldwide importance – this is only one of the four places in the world where GPS tower provides precision coordinates for the global system (hence all the security and restrictions). We even go lucky to visit the US base and speak with the commander – just like that!
